Supplies Info
To clarify our art supply policy for use in Red Dot paintings classes:
Contents of kit
Our kit has everything you need to get started. We supply canvases, disposable palette, brushes, a paint set, thinner, medium, brush cleaner, and a jar. Our price is as inexpensive as we can make it to get people started. Many oil painting classes’ starter supplies are much more expensive.
Quality
Every product except one is regarded as high quality, and will be the suggested brand/product for use going forward. The one supply that would be considered “student grade” is the paint set. The quality is high enough to get you started with a sense of how oils work without being so cheap that it’s like kiddie supplies. We reserve the right to reject low quality paint that will undermine your experience.
Former acrylics or watercolor students
Some students have worked in acrylics or watercolors and have supplies you’d like to use. They do not necessarily overlap with supplies for oils. Bring them in, and we will assess whether they’ll be useful. Please accept our assessment as to whether they’ll be useful or not.
Experienced oil painters
For experienced oil painters, bring your supplies in with the expectation that we’ll use what will translate with our way of teaching. We have a good record for keeping fumes to a bare minimum, and we aim to keep it that way. We have a specific tried-and-true medium we use, Liquin, and recommend you try it, and our thinner, Gamsol, is the only thinner allowed in the room for its low toxicity. That said, we will do what we can to use what you have.
Thanks for understanding our desire to make your class experience as smooth and educational as possible.
